Digital Pen & Paper was made possible with the invention of Anoto Functionality by Anoto AB. This patented technology that is printed on digital paper and embedded in digital pens by partners such as Nokia, Logitech and Hitachi Maxell allows a user to write information on a paper form and have it subsequently recognised and converted into electronic data.

Anoto Functionality is a fundamental part of PaperIQ's product range, and despite its simplicity to use, there's a significant amount of technology at work in connecting your handwriting to your enterprise systems. So how does it work? The diagram below and associated side bars should dispel the apparent magic at play!

	It's all in the dots Every page of digital paper has a background consisting of tiny dots - the Anoto Pattern.  The dots are variably displaced to create a pattern that is uniquely identifiable across an enormous area.
	Smart Pens The Anoto Pattern is read by an infrared camera embedded in each Digital Pen. The camera doesn't actually 'see' the form or the writing by the user - only the Anoto Pattern dots from which it can continually capture its location.
	PC or Bluetooth The co-ordinates of the writing on a digital paper form can be transmitted to PaperIQ On Demand via a USB pen cradle or wirelessly via a Bluetooth mobile phone. These co-ordinates are then interpreted or rendered based on your form design.
